Help identifying rove beetle

So I did a bit of hunting in a small undisturbed area by my house and turned up a variety of amazing specimens including a gorgeous rove beetle (I adore rove beetles

). I think it is Astrapaeus ulmim, but I'm an amateur when it comes to classification. Anybody agree or disagree?





Any input on species and care would be great!

I couldn't find any pics of the bug but a Russian print from 1905 that matches the name, possibly there is a modern name for it, otherwise I agree with your identification.

Cool thanks! Yea I was having a hard time finding it, but I do believe the Russian print was where I had gotten the name.

Hmm... Interesting. What state are you in? That helps immensely in narrowing down the species.

Astrapaeus ulmim doesn't appear to be a current taxonomic name. I think the closest North American rove beetle that I can think of right off hand is what I call a "cinnamon rove beetle," Platydracus cinnamopterus? CLICK HERE

I'm in NJ, northern if that helps further.

I'm slowly digging through insect classification, as you can tell i'm quite rusty

...but I think P. cinnamopterus is exactly what it is!

Yup, New Jersey is one of the states that has Platydracus cinnamopterus. That's probably it.
