Xyloryrctes thestalus

I was wondering if any of you beetle breeding experts have had success with getting female adults of Xyloryctes thestalus to lay eggs?

Orin in his book talks about how it took him 15 years to figure it out. He mentions something about grinding up fresh leaves and white mold as part of the substrate to get them to lay eggs but I'm not really sure what he means.

Fresh leaves as in green Oak leaves? White mold as in Kinshi or something else?

If you have actual experience in breeding this exact species, please let me know. If for some reason you want to keep it private, please message me. Maybe I can trade you something for the method.

This is an extremely common rhino beetle in Arizona in the summer but it's still a very cool looking beetle and it seems like it would be fun to raise. Just need to figure out how to get eggs from it. Using the usual methods that is used for other rhino beetles does not seem to work.

Thanks!

I think he means freshly ground rotten leaves, and white mold would (Im assuming) be the mold that grows on leaves and wood after a couple of days in a humid environment.

Seems like if the leaves were old, it wouldn't matter if they were ground up a few weeks ago or yesterday, or am I missing something. It would be awesome if Orin or beetle experience would comment on this.

I appreciate the comment bugboy. Anyone have success with them? Maybe Orin is the only one?

Thanks!

Garin

It seems like old leaves that are freshly ground, mixed with rotten wood, gives the substrate as a whole a very nice consistency ( I’m not sure what it’s caused by, but I use it to feed all my larvae and it hasn’t let me down) and also often grows white mold (if I can find some in one of my enclosures I’ll send a picture).

Orin probably has not visited Beetle Forum for years. Sigh
