What flake soil would y'all recommend for S. Aloeus larva? What shops should I buy from?

I am anticipating s. aloeus larva and would like to order some flake but im not sure from where. I was gonna get it from USBeetles, but their flake, although its labeled for ox beetles, is also labeled for stags, so I don't know if it will be less efficent for rhinos such as aloeus. anyone have any advice?

S. aloeus are not picky with their substrate, as long as it is fermented enough. I’ve used Peter Clausen’s flake soil for S. aloeus in the past and it’s worked nicely.

Alright then that's good to hear, but I checked out the price for Peter's flake and it is $23 for only a quarter gallon. most stores from my research seem to sell it for about ~$35 for a whole gallon.

That is true, but his has free shipping. Nevertheless, flake soil is expensive so you might consider making your own batch. It’s not that hard if you live somewhere warm, but it is a bit time consuming.

I see. I live in the eastern Midwest, so it's already getting a bit chilly. Could I make it in my home where the temp is about 75 degrees consistently? Or would it be better to make outside? I'd assume the smell of fermentation may not be pleasant.

It just takes longer to make in colder temperatures, but do try to avoid very cold temps. I personally don’t mind the smell, but as long as it is sealed inside the fermentation box it should be good. One thing to watch out for is mold outbreaks, but they are easily avoidable if the flake soil is constantly mixed and the materials are kept clean.
