Weird larva behavior

Oak

Goliathus
i just checked my L1 D.Granti larva..he came out on the surface of the substrate. I think it was more than 10 hours.

So i thought it was a substrate problem, and i changed the substrate, and he still does the same.

he stays still and keeps bending his legs. Anyone know what's happening?

I'll throw a few thoughts into this...

I commonly see them on the surface when they are young like that. It does seem a strange place for them to be since that would leave them very vulnerable in nature. However, I usually run the substrate right up to the surface of the container's lid, so maybe they sense it as an impenetrable surface like a rock or some other protective type layer.

One other possibility that I can think of is that there is no more food (decomposing wood) in the various depths of substrate.
