Hello
I am an art student new to the hobby of insect rearing. A stray Flower Hermit Beetle flew into my life a couple of months ago and the whole experience of hanging out with her for a couple of weeks really moved me and I let her go in the woods near me. I have since developed a keen interest in the role insects/bugs have in the ecosystem and want to explore these topics in my studio, both with paint, and in a very hands-on sense using interactive sculptural habitats to learn more about them.
I currently have some isopods I dug up around my apartment and school living in some decayed wood pulp and dead leaves with a couple of Narceus Americanus giant millipedes and Pantanal cockroaches my girlfriend got me for my birthday. They're all doing well but I don't really know how to test these guys in an observable way yet. I am interested in things that undergo a more radical process/transformation and ideally something that eats a lot of substrate or has some quirk to it. I am considering any type of bug and would most likely take whatever was offered to me, however I definitely have a strong preference for things that would be endemic to my state of Missouri.
If anyone has some extra larvae or feeder insects or whatever really that they'd be willing to part with pretty cheap please let me know. Also if anyone has any information on finding native ant queens that'd be appreciated.
Thanks
