Sub for D. tityus, L. elaphus

I recently purchased a good bit of sub from Peter and the larvae will not eat it. They are constantly up at the top of the container walking around. This only happened after I ran out of the oak flake soil and switched to the oak chunk in compost mix that he sells. Is there anything else that will work as a substrate(, need fix for now or something that works that I may not have to have shipped in)? I've heard of organic potting soil, but I am looking to get your opinions on what I can get in the mean time before new sub order is processed.

Thanks everyone!

How damp is the substrate? It will probably help if you find some rotting branches/logs to put in the enclosure, as theyll burrow into the log.

It sounds as if you might need to air the substrate out for a few days before using it. If it's been sealed in an airtight bag for any amount of time, certain gases (including carbon dioxide) can build up, and this may possibly be what the larvae are reacting to. If this is the case, the gases can be rapidly removed by mixing the substrate up a couple of times a day for a few days, and keeping it in a well-ventilated container. After it's been re-oxygenated in this way, it should biologically settle out and be ok to use.
