Hi,
I have a question for those experienced in breeding Strategus aloeus. I caught about 8 females in Arizona this last summer. I put them in a bin similar to what I used for D granti egg laying. 7-8 inches of substrate with the bottom 2-3 inches being very compact. A combination of flake soil and decomposed oak leaves. I kept the substrate a little more on the moist side because I read that S aloeus prefer moist substrate to lay eggs. After 2 months, there is only about 15 eggs.
I was reading that some breeders put leaves at the bottom of the bin to induce egg laying. I know that the other Strategus species like to have sand and grass in the substrate but that is not needed for S aloeus.
Anyway, if there are any helpful tips from someone who has been successful getting S aloeus to lay lots of eggs, I would greatly appreciate any information.
Thank you!
