Smelly substrate?

So I just cooked my darkling beetles substrate for two hours at 250 in the oven because it was infested with grain mites. It has been a few hours since I cooked it and it smells really bad. I cannot describe the smell. Will the smell go away, and if not is it okay to put my darkling beetles back in in? Thanks in advance!

It's probably safe...but a few hours is a bit much..I typically do 30mins-60mins at 320 and have never had an issue with mites and or feeding the larvae. Probably just burnt badly.
