What are some ways to give larvae some protein and is it okay to use rotting madrone wood for larva?

One piece of dry dog / cat food (kitten food often has the highest amounts of protein - check the labels for percentages) about once a week. Do not mix a bunch of pieces in with the substrate unless you like tons of mites.
There are also protein additives such as a powder that you can add to the substrate.
