Oxygen requirement

Hello this is my first post. I have some larvae that all resurfaced last night. I can only attribute it to putting paper tape over the hole because of gnats. It was the first night and it was consistent throughout all of them. I took the lids off and they all survived, but my concern is I’ve seen this done by others, why would this happen? Also is there any permanent damage that could have been done from being deprived of oxygen overnight? I am very new any advice is greatly appreciated. TIA

Hello, larvae are very resistant to deoxygenation, but as all insects do require oxygen. There are some microfibers you could use to keep gnats out but oxygen flowing. Could it be the tape has insecticide-like residues? Probably not to a very harmful extent, but it’s always a possibility.

This stuff. Says non irritating but i believe thats referring to the adhesive that’s used I could be wrong.
