opinions on heating pads?

It's recently been pretty cold and my house is heated but I have to keep my larvae upstairs where its a bit colder. I think heat can be hard to control and could be really dangerous if it got too hot. I use a little heating mat which is wrapped with some dish cloths, I also have a little stick on thermometer and it has not exceded more than it needs to with the heating mat on the lowest setting. Of course this heating mat was not meant for taking care of animals so there's some risk in that. To maintain the heat i keep them in these styrofoam boxes that are made for keeping temp, and at that point I only have to turn the heating mat on every once in a while when it starts to snow outside or get really cold. But anyways...

What is your opinion on heating mats? Do you use one? Do you recommend a more animal related one? Is there better ways to maintain a proper temperature for beetles and larvae?

Heat mats are fine generally, though a heat bulb may be better for large numbers of grubs, keep them out in the open though, this allows them to self regulate.

Depending on the species, I think most domestic larvae don't need warm temperatures. I was talking to a very experienced beetle breeder, and he was saying that many species do very well in cooler temps and some larvae he actually puts in a wine cooler if he wants very large adults. I think 60 degrees is just fine for most larvae. Maybe list the species that you are raising and ask the experts for the ideal temperature for that species?

My Coniontis and Cotinis mutabilis specimens do well at room temps. But then again, they occur naturally in my area outdoors, and the closest thing to winter here is chilly wind and the occasional weak, harmless grass frost.

I do not recommend using one as I feel there is no point. Even tropical species will breed at room temp.
yah i think this is what peter told me, but i think my main concern is when say, a house is left unattended for a bit and the house isn't well insulated and the temp drops bellow 50 or something...

Mmmm

Sorry, no idea.

Hisserdude uses heat for his tropical fancy roaches, you might wish to private message him
