New pets! Diabolical ironclad beetles

Found 14 of these guys. They are all over the trails at dusk in warmer weather. Used the pouch that holds my bivy because I didn't have anything to collect them in. Bad idea! Some threading from the pouch wrapped around one's little body, but I carefully cut if off and pulled it off.

I want them!!!

Ha, they are very abundant out here in Southern CA! They love sitting on hiking trails in the warm evenings, getting stomped on by human feet and not having a care in the world!

oh there are tons of these in my area. Never got the chance to breed them though

Yeah, information seems a little limited on these guys as far as their care. I'm going to try to breed them!

Good luck! I've heard rotting oak and certain fungi work well for keeping (and I'm assuming breeding?). The male I have isn't picky about when/where he mates lol and I have him in the same sandy set-up as my tenebrionids.

Thanks! I've been giving them mushrooms and they love them. I also have wild collected oak that I do not clean, and is found around the area I found them in, that I use in their tank. I noticed they will not eat any protein sources I give them, just some fruits, veggies, and the mushrooms. They are cool little guys (and girls).
