Don't put any substrates beside woods since this species feed purely on rotten woods. Fill about half of the container with woods. Hope you get them to reproduce
i put some substrate because when the larvae fall from the woods, they will starve to death because they cant crawl. they will use the substrate to dig to nearby rotted wood. all drilled into the wood. also there is a dormant rugose pair sleeping in the subsrate.
L2 became L3 in few weeks!!!this girl became major female in few weeks... they have short larvae stage... looks like sucess to me. they were wild collected and survived for few months now... im breeding them in dry wood... i tried moist wood and all the beetles and larvae died in few days... NEVER EVER put these larvae together in same container... i had 20 just few hours ago and i have 6... they kill and eat each other! good thing about rugose is that they have short larvae stage!
Yes... but hopefully Hardshell doesn't remove the larvae a lot in L3... could be fatal I bet... Even Platycerus is that way. It's sort of risky. Hahaha!
i think japan and europe have more experience with these beetles than us. search up Sinodendron cylindricum for more info... not the same species but very similar. they seems to be quite rare in other countries.
male and a female will pair up... while female is laying eggs, the male will guard the entrance by blocking with its horn and his shield like head. i dont know the length of the life cycle of rugose stag beetle... im expecting 2 year or 3 to complete the whole life cycle... if any one knows please post it on here
