Mulch

I've been doing some research and it seems like some rhinoceros beetles spend there entire larval stage in mulch, I think I'll try using it along with substrate from bugs in cyberspace

Never tried. Not sure if it will work due to the wood not being rotted.

Mulch is usually made of fresh wood since it's meant to remain present to suppress weeds for a period of time.

It is unlikely to be decomposed enough for use in rearing larvae.

Some types of mulch also have additives.
