Is it okay to use maple leaves in substrate?

My neighborhood is filled with maple trees and leaves are everywhere. What I am wondering is that since maple is a hardwood would it be fine to use it's dead leaves for substrate of mecynorrhina torquata ugandensis larva and adult? And I have found some oaks in my neighborhood before but they are live oak and live oak's leaves are very thick compared to black oak. Live oak also has spines so would it be harmful to larva? So would it be okay to use the live oak leaves too?
