Iridescent Beetle Question

I saw what looked like some kind of scarab beetle walking in full sun with coloring on its back that looked like the rich color of shimmer you might see floating on the top of spilled motor oil. I am a Texas resident and have never seen anything like this - all previous beetles looked more like solid earth tones. It was walking towards my car and disappeared underneath never to be seen again (although being in a hurry I quickly left making sure I didn't crush it). I'm very curious to learn anything anyone might know about this.
