How I am keeping some larva, Eleodes and such

Hi everyone

I just bought a bunch of these little craft divider things (like tackle boxes) for $2 a piece and so I had my dad drill holes in each compartment.

I am going to house all my Eleodes, Zophobas morio, and other beetle larva in this way. Anything that makes "mealworm" like larva. As a lot of them have to be separated to pupate and this way I can ensure they have food available.

I have had the Eleodes obscurus like this for a while now, and they have molted a couple times and seem ok with it. So I am going to house the Z. morio, and my other Eleodes this way.

They have carrot, assorted dry foods (oats, cricket food, cat food, hermit crab food, and a couple others) along with a wet paper towel for moisture and hydration.

One of the larger obscurus larva, about a third of it is hidden behind the paper towel:

hey my meal worm became black... does this mean they are becoming beetles or are they dad? they are not moving or eating

When they turn black, stiff, and squishy they are dead

Sorry I would poke it just to make sure.

They may get a bit darker in color when about to molt or pupate, but when they turn completely black they are dead.

I don't think that all darkling larva need to be separated, but most of the large ones do.

Tenebrio molitor does not need to be separated, Thats the only one I can think of at the moment.

There will always be a couple that do not make it when dealing with large numbers. How many do you have?

Maybe you could try giving them a moist piece of sponge or towel for water. And maybe try giving them some more types of food. I don't know if it is necessary but I give my little worms everything I can think of. Fishfood, hermit crab food, cat food, oats, cricket food from the pet store, carrots.

Well, I don't know if this works very well.

Mold is a big issue, I guess not enough ventilation.

So I have more larva moved over into small Kritter Keepers with coconut coir and a bunch of carrots. I am thinking maybe I lost some of my wormies because they dried out.
