Goliathus difficulty?

Hello,

I have not kept Goliathus in the past, as I have heard they are a more advanced species to keep. Nevertheless, I have kept Cotinis nitida for a few generations and successfully raised them through pupation. How difficult is Goliathus, in comparison to Cotinis?

Thank you!

They do require more work than other species, as you need to supplement koi pellets for larvae every few days. This is from L2 onwards. When they are about to pupate, they will start traveling around their enclosure looking for the correct medium to pupate in. You will need a clay substrate to put them in at this stage.

If you wanted pairs, another challenge would be finding them in the US as they have been pretty hard to come by.

Thank you! I use a sand and clay based substrate for Cotinis pupation, about 30 percent sand and 70 clay. Would this work for Goliathus?

Thank you for the information Ratmosphere! Would the humidity during pupation need to decrease like other Cetoniids? According to Orin’s book buying L1 larvae is better than older instars because of the possible stunted growth, but do the L1s need to be fed any protein? At what time of the year are adult pairs usually available? Thank you!

Check this video out, it shows the proper moisture level for the medium. Generally it would be just flake soil from L1, then L2 supplement the pellets.

I am unsure when pairs are available.
