Fruit flies

Hey, is there any fruits that don't attract fruit flys but beetles like? I'm using jelly's right now, but it would be so so so much easier if I can just use fruit.

As far as I have read the only substance that does not cause fruit flies is beetle jelly. Although, when I was keeping my male and female Dynastes Tityus I did give them a mixture of natural maple syurup and also scooped some "bleeding trees" of their sap and put it on a damp napkin and they seemed to have loved it. It can produce flies over time, but seems to have been a lot better than just fruits.

Ill try the syrup alternative, can they be reared just on this solution though? Or is this considers only a treat? Oh you finally got a pair of D.tityus

Fruit flies only build up in numbers if they can breed, so if you are seeing a lot of flies in your tanks you may be feeding too much at one time - I do on a fairly regular basis as I can't manage the tanks daily some weeks.

A handy way to cut down on the number of flies around is to make a "vinegar trap". Get a small glass jar and half fill it with vinegar or wine or beer. Cover the top with some clingfilm / food wrap and punch a few small holes in the lid. Stick this on top of your beetle tubs. Fruit flies are attracted to the scent of the contents as it is similar to the smell given off by decaying fruit (alcohols and the like). The happily find their way in through the holes in the lid but can't get out and drown in the liquid. A small trap will work for several months provided it does not dry out.

Or you can just use them for the food for your spiders. lol

I purposely let the fruit flies infest my house so that the H. venatoria and other spider that roam inside my house can feed on them. Seems that it's actually working great as I see great number of FFs dead inside the spider webs and near the place where the H. venatoria spend their day.

Lol I have been feeding them to my baby mantids lol. And I've already been using the exact trap , lol. I'll just try to clean the cage once a day. Hopefully that will help.
