I have been making flake soil for my stag beetles for about a year and I'm pretty confident with the basics now. I have also made a few batches with some soy flour in addition to the wheat flour and the larvae are growing well, but I won't know if the batches have been fully successful until I see the size and health of adults (if they make it).
I'd like to begin experimenting with other additives to increase the size and health of adults. One source of info I have is the Richard's inverts recipe which suggests four additives (trehalose, cellulose, chitosan, glutamic acid).
Does anyone have a resource you can cite or can explain what these additives in particular are for? Are there any others I should consider that you have found are better?
I assume I should not add all at once but perhaps should start with one or two? And would you recommend adding this ideally to the soy flour/wheat mix or to a plain flake soil for best results?
