Why does Dynastes Tityus color change to brown when burrowed in wet soil?

Yup, I've wondered that myself. My thoughts are that it's akin to rotting wood going from dark brown to a light tan color when it dries out.

Excellent info, Lucanus! Yup, I figured it had to do with pores expanding and contracting, but I hadn't even thought about how the diffraction of light plays a role in it, too!
