Determining sex

This may be a dumb question, but is it possible to determine the sex of a larva or is it only really possible to tell after it has pupated? I'm specifically asking about a larva I so far believe to be Dynastes tityus. Thank you.

(Yeah I’m sorta quoting a post of Orin’s that I came across )

In stags you can see the ovaries through the sides of the abdomen, in flower and rhinos there's a spot (herald's organ) on the lower ventral abdomen if it's a male.
