Darkling substrate?

My eleodes hispilabris have a substrate that completely consists of coco fiber, and they lay lots of eggs. Will they lay even more if I give them some sand or dead leaves in their substrate? And is it normal that my darklings stop laying eggs when it's fall/winter? Thanks in advance!

 
Of course they goal is always to mimic the areas they are found in. I'd recommend sand as a component and they larvae will like something to nibble on.
