Dark colored wood vs. light wood?

Jordan

Pupa
All the rotten wood I've been collecting is very dark in color. Even when I found some kind of light colored wood it turned dark not long from when I collected it. I see some people use lighter almost opaque looking wood. Is one better for growth than the other?

Thanks,

Hmmm. I think it should be fine. Make sure you clean the wood by baking, boiling, freezing, or a combination of 2 or more of these. Anyways, about the wood color. I use a variety of different colored wood and I'd say that dark wood can be great! In fact, I raise Dorcus brevis off of pretty dark substrate! Dark wood is usually more decayed, so it won't last as long, but it probably is a little healthier for many species. I personally like to mix different levels of decayed wood. Can you show me this substrate? What is it being used for?
