Cotinis mutabilis

the larvae shouldn't really need any supplemental heat unless you live in a cold area, and plan on keeping them outside. I keep my cotinis in wood flake with a small amount of sand. good luck

Andy,

They don't really NEED cracked bird seed, they will eat: rotten wood, hardwood leaves, dry pet food and a bunch of other things. The last large batch I had I used cracked corn almost exclusively. The larvae can often be found in compost piles, so lots of different foods and rotten vegetation.

They need very little moisture! Any extra amount of moisture and you might end up with a mite explosion.

As far as I know the larvae are extremely hardy and will eat most edible things. I can dig them up in the garden where there's just mulch and potting soil, and also below my fruit trees...
