I have 3 of these, and I got them to lay eggs. They don't seem really productive though, I can only see 2 larva in their cage. They love to burrow! Hope your beetle does good!

 
Yes, mine seems to be underground at all times except a short period in the afternoon.

Have you noticed what food they prefer? Mine does not seem to actively approach fruit and even when placed on top only feeds for a brief period.

 
They eat dog food, this seems to be a darkling beetle's favorite food. I also put carrot in their cage, but they seem not to eat it.
