Collecting Wood

Hey ya'll, was wanting to get an opinion on some rotten hardwood I found during a nature walk.

Found a very old oak tree, the bark had all fallen off and the inside was literally falling out of the trunk. The wood is very brown, dry, and crumbles in my hand.

I gathered a five gallon bucket full, but would like to know if this stuff is too rotten to be used as food for rhinoceros beetle larvae.

Thanks for the feedback.

You mostly want to use white-rotten wood. If this is brown-rotten wood, it may not be suitable for raising beetle larvae.

Ah gotcha. This stuff does feel very gritty compared to the flake soil I'm currently using.

There are a lot of fallen trees with mushrooms growing. Would those be suitable or do you suppose the mushrooms would have absorbed the nutrients.

That's exactly the stuff you want.
