Cetonia aurata diary

Two weeks ago I catch a Cetonia aurata female.

I put it in a terrarium with some coco substrate.

2 days ago I check the substrate and found 18 eggs. I transfer them in some nutritive substrate ( traditional flower beetle substrate ).

Today I have already 8 grubs.

Today, I've check my Cetonia Aurata box.

It's time to change the substrat and the size of the box from 3l to 5l.

I found only 16 of them. Canibalistic behavior? Predator? (I find the substrat full of centipedes, red, little less than a 1cm and fast) or simply naturals death... I've change all the substrat, and set them in a larger box.

The majority of them are L2 but some of them are really biger than her sibling, and some other seems to be still small L1.

I've not weight them. I think my kitchen weighted is not able to weight precisely such little things.

I've to order a better one if you have some advices.

And before the end of that tread, I've the chance to see one of them just a few minutes after her molting to L2 I guess maybe L3 but it seem to soon.

I hope you enjoy this report and I hope my English is not as bad as I thought ...

If you still want to weigh them, you could try weighing all of them and dividing by however many there are still. That many should be enough to register on a reasonably sensitive scale.

Centipedes will eat your grubs, even if they're considerably larger than the centipedes. They're one of the reasons it's recommended that substrate is frozen or heat treated--you don't want to introduce them to your enclosures.

Thanks for your advises.

I'm looking for a sensitive scale for a wile. it's cool to have a model.

For the centipedes I'be solved the problems with the last substrate change. I've haven't seen any of them since this time.

The grubs seems really aggressive so between them during the substrat check.

I have add some cat food to the substrat, so wait and see. ^^

New substrat check and change. They are still 14, no loss this time, and it seems the have appreciate the cat food.

They have turn yellowish too and they weight around 2.2gr each.
