Breeding

My two atlas beetle larvae seem to have disappeared. I use to see them daily on the clear side of the plastic aquariums. But they seem to not been going their lately. What are the chances that are morphing to a pupate state?? I can kinda see a big ring in the soil in the female container.

I've never raised the species, but I'd guess this change in behavior is a good sign they are pupating especially if they have been L3 for a long time. How large is the aquarium?

the size of each of them is. 6 x 3 x 4. All inches.

Oh and i put a rotton log on my stag beetle larvae i see wood shavings all around. Im just afraid maybe when he changes to an imago he cant get out cause of the log.

the big ring might be a pupal cell? i haven't raised any chalcasoma larvae before so i dont know if that behavior is usual or not.

today I saw few pairs of C. atlas (or caucasus, perhaps might be even C. mollenkampi). but they were a bit too young and small.

tomorrow I was told that I can come as see some big specimens. so, I'm considering to get them !

Kaidin,

Where will you get these beetles? From a shop? Are they alive or dried?

How much does a pair of C. atlas cost in Bangkok? Do they sell other beetles?

Do they sell them at street shops or on the internet?

I have seen many food TV shows where people in Thailand eat live and dead bugs. It is very interesting. Are these beetles sold to be pets or food?

well, it greatly depends where to buy.

I saw them at some pet shop (there are some reptiles & arachnids too) - there it was perhaps a bit expensive, like $40 a pair.

actually now as I recall it was rather C. caucasus than C. atlas, quite big size - that's why I guess price was a bit high.

otherwise there are hardly other places - I mean, not many shops which sell insects, particularly beetles.

arachnids (scorps, tarantulas) - a bit more avail. but not beetles.

other beetles I saw there were some Lucanids, like Dorcus sp. (forgot exact name).

on internet there are only 1-2 websites, in Thai lang. only. and then the variety is not much, and yet again even those very few are sold out very quickly merely among the local people.

(although as I know there are a lot of sellers who sell directly to Japanese breeders/ collectors, not even bothering to offer on a local market of those very few, although growing number of beetles fans)

this beetles/ insects trade is very new in Thailand, I mean particularly breeding alive beetles. although dried insects business is huge and already pretty old.

as well as trade in all sorts of various other alive animal species is going on pretty steadily.

I guess because most of people still view beetles rather as ... FOOD ! (yeah, you're right in that ! LOL

)

however during last few years some enthusiasts has started making consistent efforts to develop this trade and promote beetles as pets.

so, I heard that now there are quite a lot of beetles fans.

because I guess it has to do with general following of everything Japanese, pretty much more or less all over SE Asia, Thailand not an exception.

so, slowly but surely Thai people has started to get aware of their own rich variety of species, as well as the fact that the country has both very good favorable climate and accordingly a lot of easily available food etc. for insects (comparing, say to some colder countries as Canada or Scandinavian, even US and Europe - where there are 4 seasons).

beetles as pets are of course much easier and cheaper to keep.

so, let's see - may be pretty soon this business will bloom. because Thai people are very fast to learn and to catch up with all the innovations and especially profitable trends and fads !
