Anyone use a compost bin to make your flake soil?

So, I'm just getting into this hobby and can't imagine how expensive it would be to buy flake soil all the time.  I've been reading up and am going to start making my own batches.  That said, what do most of you use for mixing/storing the flake soil?  I've seen plastic bins, buckets, polypropylene bags, etc.  Since they have to be mixed often has anyone tried using a home compost bin?  They are made for composting, can be rotated easily to mix the contents, black to stay warm outside.  Seems near perfect as a solution.  I wonder if it would have enough oxygen exchange and keep flies/gnats out.  Thoughts?

I think the only issue might be gnats/flies getting in through the vents.  That said, I just bought a used Geme 19L electric composter for cheap.  With flake soil being so expensive I figure I could get my money's worth pretty quickly.  Plus, I think I'd be able to use it as a normal home food waste composter when it isn't in service as a flake soil super-machine!

I tried a compost bin, I wouldn't try it again. It sounds logical, but I couldn't get it to make compost any quicker, better, or seemingly at all, even using

a compost starter. Maybe you can do better, but it was a waste of money, and luckily, I sold the bin to someone else. 

I bought the bin from a  popular web site, it was a thought out purchase.

Thanks.  I wound up buying a refurbished Geme 19L electric composter.  I was in the market for a home composter anyway and heard that many hobbyists in Japan use home composters to make flake soil.  Thought It'd give it a shot before relegating it to the kitchen.  First batch is cooking now so I'll see how that goes.
