A dichotoma minor male

There are lots of factors. to me, the most important is the food. Other factors could be gene, temperature, disturbance...etc

if you like this species a lot, then breed a couple pairs. Beetle's size varies even if they eat the exact same thing.

Maybe you can tell us where do you think the problem is, and people can give suggestions from there.

Actually I love this species. Personally I think that access to more substrate could of been a factor and that the substrate wasn't wet enough and I moved them to a premade hardwood substrate. The pupal cells were quite big and that it was at room temp.

Was it an overseas company? If the soil was the perfect decay then I'm not sure what happened. Next time try putting the larva in a bigger container. I hear of people using protein additive to the substrate to produce majors. You could even try making a hole in the substrate where the larva is and drop a piece of dog food in. If it doesn't eat it, remove it or you will get mites!

Always remember to keep the container at a good moisture level. You may get some mold but I just scrape that off outside with gloves on and then take a shower. Check for frass too because after a certain period of time you need to change the substrate.

Looks like I learned what I needed to do. At least I'm making some substrate and its attracting fruit flies and it smells a bit of fruit.
