As long as they have enough food they can be kept communally, but this generally reduces adult size. They also don’t lay terribly large amounts of eggs like Cotinis for example, so keeping them separate isn’t impossible. Supplementing their diet with cat/dog/fish food can also help!

They are extremely easy to breed, you can even breed them in inadequate substrates as long as it’s moist and you remove the eggs and larvae shortly afterwards.

Hello! I bred them a few times and they always seem to lay the eggs in small chewed in holes at the base of the cactus. You don’t need a live cactus to rear them, I’ve kept the young larvae and they simply eat off the cactus pieces being used to feed the adults. Good luck!

I do believe there could be some legit sellers, but even then the trade is so restricted that exports to the U.S. and elsewhere are extremely risky and/or illegal, especially regarding beetles, phasmids and orthopterans.

I’ve bred S. aloeus with finer substrate in the bottom and substrate with rotten leafs and less fine particles in the top. Nevertheless, they aren’t really productive.

Hello, larvae are very resistant to deoxygenation, but as all insects do require oxygen. There are some microfibers you could use to keep gnats out but oxygen flowing. Could it be the tape has insecticide-like residues? Probably not to a very harmful extent, but it’s always a possibility.

Dorcus usually live a long time, sometimes over a year. The humidity needs to be high enough or the beetle can easily desiccate.
