Where You Have Come Across Buprestids

I'm getting more into buprestids and I was wondering where people are finding them (location and state please)? If you have pictures or have already identified them, feel free to put that info up too! I want to get a good idea of where to collect this next spring/summer/fall and any extra info...

    Walnut as Substrate

Can walnut be used for substrate, or is it poisonous to beetle larvae? I know it's a hardwood, but some compound is produced by the tree that kills plants around it. I'm asking because my dad has been woodworking with walnut lately and has a lot of walnut sawdust laying around that I could have.

    Substrate Filter

I've read that substrate can be filtered to save some if the larvae haven't eaten it yet. I was just curious to what people used to filter their substrate (assuming they do, of course)?

    Small yellow/tan balls in substrate

I recently checked in on one of my larvae and found a bunch of small yellow/tan balls scattered about on the substrate. It was clustered in some spots, but very scattered in others. Could these be eggs or fungus? Or something else I don't know about? I'm guessing that cooking the substrate a bit...

    D. tityus grub

So I found a D. tityus grub during the summer this year (mid-late July I believe) and I've been keeping it in a box with substrate from the tree I pulled it from. Seems like a later instar since it's quite large. About a week ago, it seemed like it was beginning to make a pupal cell, but then it...

    Cold Collecting

Hoping to be able to wander out later to peel back some bark and flip some logs. I found some nice buprestid larvae and a handful of tenebrionids last time I was out there, but it was definitely warmer than it is now! Anything odd I may be able to find that I'm not aware of?

Good First Beetle to Attempt to Rear/Breed?

What do you all recommend as a good first breeding beetle? I've got a few tenebrionids running around and help care for a few others at my university's insectary, but what thoughts do you all have? Thank you!

    New Guy

Hello all! I've been collecting beetles for a couple years now, but I've decided I want to get more into rearing species out and possibly getting some breeding going. I have a variety of beetles that I'm keeping now (mostly tenebrionids, but I also have a cicindelid and a handful of different...
