Johnboy
IMO its too vertical and too 'wide'. He needs to be able top rotate himself.Thats JMO
Johnboy
Your larva is hairy like a Xylotrupes. I'd dig that pupa out of the dirt, they are not normally sorrounded by dirt (your substrate was too loose for a pupal cell) and the submersion can lead to death. Yes, thats what species I said it was. Xylotrupes are prone to pupating on the surface. No matter what size tub they are in.
crazee horse
Ok, I'll try again with the other bit I got left. Thats the width of a tea spoon and actually quite flat !
crazee horse
well here is the new cell, slight incline, bit of space around his highness..............................................
Johnboy
looks much better IMO. You should dampen the bottom of the foam and place it all into a container that will retain some moisture. But thats just MO.

crazee horse
My male died whilst pupating. Not sure why. He is in a warm slightly humid enviroment. He half came out, and now he is just still ? I have only been checking him every coiple days visually. Just removing the lid for a few seconds. Quite gutted, waa really looking forward to my first beetle.
Bill Myers
Sorry to hear that, Crazee Horse. Yeah, I don't get it. Usually, if the humidity is too low, they have a problem coming out of their pupal shell. However, it seems like you were aware of the humidity factor. I dunno. Sometimes, these things just happen no matter how hard we try to keep it from happening.
crazee horse
Was really excited at the thought of having something from larvae to pupae to adult. Im really interested in the whole beetle thing, just a shame it all takes so long.
