Goliathus Posted February 13, 2020 Report Share Posted February 13, 2020 Some species of cetoniine scarab larvae will emerge from the soil in response to rain and crawl around on the surface, if the ground becomes too wet. It might have been looking for some drier soil, or, it was possibly fully grown and seeking an area where the soil was of a more suitable composition (more sandy / clay) to build its cocoon underground. For many insects though, being out in the open and exposed to the risk of predators (or unfavorable weather conditions) is unavoidable. They survive mainly through their ability to breed in large numbers, ensuring that at least some will manage to live to produce the next generation.
