  1. maybe a Japanese beetle, what habitat and location?
  2. I don't think a lot are being bred, they're a little touchy and so plentiful in the wild.
  3. If they're clearly marked it's not so bad. The taboo is mostly selling hybrids as something else or ruining existing lines.
  4. I know "people" say that but I don't believe anyone has documented or even kept one that long. They normally only live 3-4 years.
  5. I like Eleodes spinipes and one stock is as old as 2006. Also, a good rhino would be Dynastes tityus. Stags are great but North American Lucanus aren't easy past the first generation.
  6. Welcome! Darklings can be rewarding and long-lived but some are hard to breed. Have you tried new types of beetles?
  7. Maybe a deep substrate, big dead leaves or and carrion on top? Were they only on sand?
  8. Welcome! If you like them as much you might try with flower beetles or rhinos first. Stags are a little more exacting.
  9. 5.5 mm more likely to be hercules than tityus
  10. Love to see how you feed them and get/raise grubs.
  11. He's been preparing to pupate since the day he hatched, but prepupa is normally the immobile stage when they can't use their legs anymore.
  12. Probably not prepupa yet, looks like it could still remake cell
  13. There are a bunch of neat native species, if those were widely kept it would make a difference.
  14. They're easy but they need to be fed and do kill each other if kept together too long. Hard to find them I thought, especially this time of year.
  15. male, shape of terminal sternite, there are books out there with this stuff in them
  16. Welcome! I found one this summer but no oothecae so far.
  17. Try ultimate guide to breeding beetle book for the original 1996 methodology. There are many versions and opinions in the ensuing years on many pages but the variations are usually minor and you can't tell who has gone through multiple generations or is only an internet expert.
  18. So just regular flake soil but not compacted?
  19. When they are underground they don't necessarily move much. They move a lot faster on the surface since they're about to be eaten.
