  1. Hi can you ID a beetle for me?

  2. A lot of people have mixed feelings about insects and spiders and it's nice to see somebody at your age confronting those fears and thinking about them, and sharing them online with others. Spiders are one kind of arachnid, which are arthropod relatives of insects. Daddy long legs are actually in a different order of arachnids than spiders (not to be confused with cellar spiders which actually are spiders). Scorpions are another kind of arachnid in an entirely different order. Many of us grow up in a culture of fear for anything with six or eight legs, and our parents squash any curiosity we have about them at an early age like our curiosity is a spider itself. I am glad to see you are thinking about this stuff. Many people go through their lives just killing thoughtlessly on account of their upbringing and out of habit. The world and the diversity of nature is a beautiful thing if you can learn to appreciate it. We are surrounded by nature's beauty all the time and ugliness is merely a human judgment that is self-defeating.
  3. I grew up next to a butterfly bush. She was my second mother. A wonderful provider! Great to see all these colors and if you see me out their sitting on your butterfly bushes one morning, don't be surprised! 🤣
  4. That's a hobby I could easily get into. Hard not to jump in with both feet! Good luck!
  5. Wonderful to see you here after all these years, Teneb Fan, and don't let Hisserdude fool you. He's a HUGE teneb fan too!
  6. So great to see you here, Snagbug! Just love your Instagram account @snagbug !!!
  7. Pesticides are a significant concern with store-bought plants. I posted a youtube video on this topic recently (Desert Beetles Part 2). Another concern is that many plants need a lot of light and keeping a mostly closed up container near a window can cause heat to build up to dangerous levels. The amount of heat build up can change with the seasons and so if you test it with a thermometer in one month and it is safe, it can still become quite dangerous when the sun is in a different position in the sky in another month.
  8. I'm told by the hosting company that the issues are now resolved. I enabled sound notification again I still seem able to post. Thanks you all for your patience and help through this situation. Back to the beetles!
  9. I have passed it on to the tech support guys who had checked in with their developers at one point at least, but they are in the UK I believe and should be seeing all this great new info this evening. Hopefully it is as helpful to them in fixing the issues as it has been for me in simply being able to log in and reply after about 3 days now. I can also finally log in to the admin panel and did approve a few new members earlier before deciding I better hold off on approving the rest (sorry to anybody in the pending approval queue) so that they don't join into an alternate reality where they are members but can't participate anymore than they could as "guests/viewers!" I really appreciate @scottbot84 and @Schiem for finding this temporary workaround for myself and other members. I few people had mentioned they had pending business going on in the messages area that they needed to get access to ASAP. I'm sorry for any inconveniences, and thanks to everybody for their patience and general interest in the forum...and beetles! I don't post much on here but I continue to be very interested in beetles and in supporting the beetle hobby through multiple avenues including Instagram and Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWoqlGLb_vk
  10. Holy frass, that worked for me! Thanks so much Scott for posting this. The forum company has not managed to find a solution to the problem that all started with a software update 3 days ago!
  11. Neat! What is the length on these?
  12. If I was going to make a day trip out of Phoenix to see a few bugs in general I'd head up into the Superstition Mountains and flip some rocks. You may see some fun tenebs, scorpions, etc. I've found Arenivaga sp. roaches under rocks there in the Tortilla Flat area. Definitely nice to get out of the city limits and that's a pretty close spot to target.
  13. Dung beetles and the aforementioned title species...
  14. Tiger beetles and a longhorn from the recent trip...
