  1. Orin's book has a little blurb about breeding them. Do you have his book?
  2. Can you raise these beetles? In my opinion, they're the prettiest of all beetles.
  3. I thought they take the dung underground to make brood balls out of it?
  4. Hello, Yesterday I gave my dung beetles a lot of pig dung and they dug it all underground, but today they don't seem as excited about a new shipment of dung. It is a bit chillier and less sunny today. Is this okay? Thanks!
  5. Hi, I remember reading that. Mine were cannibalizing each other even when resources were not in short supply, so I had to separate them.
  6. Hello, When my L. elaphus were L1 and L2, I'd notice that sometimes larvae would just disappear when kept together, and it was almost always the smallest ones. I have never noticed cannibalism with Dynastes tityus or granti. Anyone can corroborate this? Thanks!
  7. Hey, thanks for the reply! I didn't know that GG larvae are so hard to find in the wild. Given what we know about raising the larvae in captivity, can you speculate about their diet/habits in the wild? Let's brainstorm! I'll start. 1) Goliath larvae need a high protein diet. If you place live insects in their vicinity, they will hunt the insects. Their high protein diet allows them to develop much quicker than Dynastes or Megasoma and are able to time their life cycle so that it corresponds to the annual dry/wet season in their habitat. 2) Goliath larvae are able to move pretty quickly (from videos I've seen), quicker than larvae of Dynastes or Megasoma, which is necessary if they want to hunt insects. 3) They don't eat rotting wood. This suggests to me that they live in moist ground, not logs, and hunt insects or worms. People must have seen where the adult females lay their eggs in the wild, right? This would give us a clue as to where the larvae live. Anyone have other ideas?
  8. Hello, I read that Goliath beetle larvae eat high protein foods like dog or cat food and do not really eat rotten wood like Dynastes or Lucanus. Anyone care to speculate what their diet would consist in the wild? Would they just hunt around for insects? Would they eat dung? Where do they even live in the wild? Underground or in logs? Etc... Thanks!
  9. While I have not seen it personally, in Orin's book, he has an ominous paragraph about it. Thanks!
  10. Oh cool, is there any special technique to get the larvae to be so heavy?
  11. Hello all, I was wondering what the maximum weight of a D. tityus and D. granti larvae would be.
  12. Thank you everybody! I have already learned many new things by browsing the forum.
  13. Hello everyone, I am new to beetleforum, but not to beetle keeping! I raised some Lucanus elaphus larvae when I was younger, and now I've rediscovered my love for these creatures. I am currently raising D. tityus as well as Lucanus elaphus. Thank you!
