Beetle Locations in Tokyo, Japan?

I will be in Tokyo Japan (near the Tokyo Disney area) at the end of December. I would love to visit some beetle places while I am there. Are there any cool exhibits, zoos, parks or places to buy beetles to check out? I would bring back lots of pictures of course! (legally, what else could I bring back?)

They are supposed to be at most department stores, just ask for Kabutomushi. You could bring back beetle jellies and various supplies if you wanted. Hopefully you'll find some cool bug shops and save some photos for an Invertebrates-Magazine article on your trip.

When i went to Japan i found them in the most random places like flower shops and stuff so you should have zero trouble finding them. When i just went for a walk a nearby park i found Japanese rhino beetles all over the ground (someone dumped their breeding material and beetles they didn't want anymore on the ground in the park... I need to get back to Japan so bad...sigh...

During summer you can find beetles and beetle supplies in most garden centres (Komeri, Musashi etc.) around Japan. Unfortunately it's only a mainstream thing in summer though, and you'll probably have to go to a specialist shop to find anything beetle-related (outside of toys/kids' clothes/card games) in December. Either that or one of the big 'Black Out' beetle fairs; but there aren't any of those happening in Tokyo in late December. You can check out the schedule here though, if you're interested.

This website has a list of a load of insect shops in Tokyo (just those in the section marked 東京都). It's all in Japanese, but a load of the shops have websites, which you can get to by clicking on the little blue house link. If you click on the red text '地図' to the right of each shop's address, it'll take you to a map showing the shop's location.

Hope you have a great trip!

Ok . . . . . . . tickets have been bought and I will be going to Tokyo, Japan leaving November 30!!!!!!

Orin, well it seems I will have to visit some department stores while in Tokyo. lol I would love to write an article for IM with plenty of photos! I just need to make sure I have enough places (and beetles) to photograph. If you know of any people who have visited Tokyo, please ask them to reply to this post!

Kabutootaku11, Ok, I guess I will add flower shops to the beetle location list! Did you find beetles for sale any where else?

nurunuru, Garden centers too huh? (adds to list) But wow, thank you for that wonderful website with all those insect shops! That was very helpful! Have you been to any of them?

Everyone else, please add a Beetle location if you know one, I will bring back LOTS of pictures to share!!!!

The rest of the trip will consist of seeing the Cirque Du Soleil show ZED (it is closing forever) and going to DisneySea. Also lots of sight seeing!

I will post updates so keep an eye out!

Only a few more days untill I leave for Tokyo! I am flying out November 30!

I looked at that 'Black Out' beetle fair webpage that nurunuru posted, and I think they have a fair during December 4 and if that is true, I may check it out, if it's close. The dates are listed near the bottom in white. None of it is in English but, by the numbers, I am making an educated guess. Have a look and tell me what ya think.

Besides that, if anyone else has beetle locations please post them and Thanks again!

Alas I saw this too late to help out with info about that beetle fair on 4th Dec. I see from the website that it was in Aichi, which is quite a way from Tokyo, so I'm guessing you might have given it a miss. Just one more reason to go back I guess!

Also, do try the puffer fish! (Just don't eat the liver.) And if it's not too late, my biggest sushi recommendation would have to be 'otoro' (fatty tuna). It's expensive, but completely worth it if you get it in a good sushi restaurant. 'Engawa' (the outside edge of a ray's wing) is really good too, and not so pricy.

I am back, and safe. I've been back for a bit, but it takes time to get into the swing of things, you know how it is. Soon I will give the low down of my amazing trip! I was only able to find one beetle store, but it was wonderful!

nurunuru, yeah I did figure out that the beetle fair was way too far away.

As for sushi, I've only just got into sushi so I kept it safe. I stuck to salmon and shrimp, but I did try two types that I didn't know what they were. I still don't know what I ate. However, besides sushi, I had some amazing food! I will even post some of the food pics when I get the chance. Thanks again for all the help everyone. And I did bring back some beetle jelly so check the classifides soon. Full post of my trip to Tokyo soon to come!
