  1. Sad face... I can't provide the large aquarium. I was planning on using the same setup I was originally going to do with my newt. do a DIY project to add like an area for substrate. then the rest as water http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/setups4.shtml Like pictures 2 or 3. Best I could probably offer is a twenty gallon, I don't have that much space
  2. http://shop.bugsincyberspace.com/Assassin-Bugs-Aquatics-Care-Book-bic8.htm A lot of equipment and time? Please do tell
  3. They are EVERYTHING I've ever looked for in a beetle... Communal? Predators? Pretty? Semi-aquatic? Heck yes! Has anyone had any luck keeping these? are they covered in the aquatic bug book? Edit: PS: I still blame you guys for my beetle obsession, I'm going to end up a crazy beetle man when I grow up old and alone
  4. fuu... Well I'll need to get a new cage, lol any recommendations for a beetle that will be happy in a 12" x 12" x 18" with substrate no deeper then 4"?
  5. I know, old thread.... But Oh mah gawd! I need one... I blame this forum, feeding my beetle obsession. Are they cannibalistic?
  6. I've got one of those terrariums where it stands up right and has those front doors to open up, is this a bad idea for these guys, should I get an ordinary terrarium with the only opening from the top?
  7. Ahh, no. I don't even think they can survive where I live, thinking they are mainly found in the warmer states (Texas for example) I live in the freezing Colorado, lol. So I'm going to need to find someone that can capture, or breed them and I'll have to buy them
  8. Blah, I was hoping they would be able to be communal predators... Like emperor scorpions or... Something, because other then that they seem just awesome. I was going to try and copy their habitats as close as I could, so I was going to add a bunch of climbing sticks, and put moth and caterpillar larvae in those reptile basking hammocks or some kind of bowl with suction cups since they climb trees to hunt in the wild
  9. So I have a D. Granti... Two actually, and searching for a stag beetle. Now I want Calosoma scrutator (Fiery searcher beetle I believe is its common name) So has anyone kept these awesome caterpillar hunters? I found very little details in owning them, are there any books out for (I'm guessing?) Ground beetles? So far I found NOTHING other then they like high humidity, although I found not enough of this statement to truely believe it. I also heard that they cannibalize ONLY if not enough food
  10. Another question, if I do get two for like a ten gallon tank, would they be okay? I hear that the larvae cannibalize, is this the case for not enough food, or not enough space? Or do they do it just for the heck of it?
  11. Another question popped into mind. They give no information on water (Except diluted all natural maple syrup and sugar water) is this true? Should I offer fresh water as well? Will 70-75% humidity be good enough, for both larvae and adult?
  12. I have a book in the mail right now, What kind of substrate do you use? for them? I was just planning on going to the hardware store or a plant nursery and just getting a big bag of soil, or that block of soil from the pet stores
  13. So i was hoping one of you can help me! I was planning on getting A D. Granti beetle... Every caresheet I have found are missing details... How deep do I need the substrate (Some say pure, all natural soil, others say part soil part manure?) Are there any places I can BUY rotting wood for the larvae? I even put up an add on craigslist for rotting wood, I got a reply with Populus wood, could that cause any harm to a D. Granti grub? I know some say oak, some say birch, others say it doesn't matter... How many gallons? Ten? Fifteen? What about climbing objects? Hides or will they burrow? Communal-safe or best solitary? I am getting one as a grub, not adult so please keep that in mind Edit: I also wanted to get a cleanup crew of isopods and springtails, could this cause stress?
